The Story of Nunu Killing an Overseer

This story is told to a group of slaves.  It is the story of how Nunu killed an overseer through her powers from Africa.

[Shola: Fact he's one of the most trusted head slaves.]

Storyteller:    And that mornin;
hm - Nunu, she wasn't takin' nothin'
She got to mumblin' in her country talk.
And nobody, nobody in that yard had any idea what she was
    talkin about.
She was a mumblin'.
You hear me?
hm - Now once somebody got to mumblin', then somebody
else got to mumblin', and [be]fore you know it, everybody
     in the yard was mumblin'.
They was mumblin' the same thing - honey.
I mean it was just like a song.
And everyone was just a mumblin' child.
We was a chantin' and we didn't have no idea what we was
    talking about.
You hear me?
We was gone.
I [e]xpect whatever it was we was sayin' it started to do the
job, cause all of a sudden that old cracker got to gaspin' for
    air (ha ha).
He got to gaspin.
Lord, he couldn't catch his breath.
Then his eyes got to rollin back in his head.
His tongue got ta goin' back in his mouth - you know.
I mean foam was just comin' all out of his mouth.
You hear me?
Foam was comin' out of the man's mouth.
And right about that time, Nunu she get strong.
She take a notion to jerk back her arm.
She put her eyes on that old cracker and he got to goin' round.
Right about that time...

Lucy:    What you doin?

Storyteller:    All you could hear was that old cracker gasping.
He was just gaspin ha
Like he had a chicken bone stuck...

Lucy:    Come on, she don't sound right, we better be goin'.

Shola:   I don't wanna go, I wanna hear this.

Storyteller:    All of us, we just stared at Nunu.
She wasn't payin' no attention to us at all.
Her eyes were stuck on that old cracker.
And he was just goin' round.
Lord Child I mean you ain't never seen nothin' like it.
And I tell you you ain't never gonna see nothin like that as
     long as you live.
I don't know what got into him whether it was God or the
     devil.
But somethin' enough got into him.
And Nunu - hm - she was just starin at him.
And as he sat there in front of all of us his skin - everything
on him turned to ashy gray.
[Flashback to Shola's rape] And that Nunu you know she just
stood there like she was God himself.

The girl just stood there and the man died.
Leanin' right there against that cabin he died.
I tell ya for me - hm - that was real Judgement Day.
For all of us to stand their witnesses as that old cracker died.
And it took Nunu and her home tongue to finally do the job we
    all had been prayin' for.
Folks 'round here say it was a mother tone.
You know where people come from.
Nunu is an Akan.
Always talks about her peoples.
She always talks about 'em.
That's what she is.
