African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church
Edgar Sanchez

Around the same time as the founding of the A.M.E., James Varrick founded the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, also as a response to racial discrimination. The early society was known as the "Freedom Church". Spiritual, social, and economic emancipation were the hallmarks of their faith. Other noted members included Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, and Sojourner Truth. The church operates in the United States, Africa, South America, and the West Indies and maintains Livingstone College in Salisbury, N.C. The U.S. membership of the church in 1998 was about 1.2 million, making it one of the largest African Methodist bodies.
