Even more history
In the early 20th century the migration of African Americans from the rural South to the North, resulted in a decline in the African American Presbyterian churches in the South. The growth of churches in larger Northern cities was slow. Middle class African Americans were drawn to a more formal style of worship and an educated clergy.
Desegregation efforts continued throughout the 60s and 70s. Edler G. Hawkins was elected the first African American moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly.
