The Civil War divided Presbyterianism along regional lines. In North Carolina, a number of churches established schools for African Americans in the south, including Ashmun Institute (Lincoln University).
After the war, African American membership of the church was organized into a separate African American synod. Presbyterians accepted the principle of “separate but equal” in church matters
