announces its Thirteenth Annual Essay Contest for Graduate and Undergraduate students.

The 2002 Essay contest is sponsored by Dr. Norma Solomon White, the 25th National President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. http://aka1908.com/akatoday.htm

All full time undergraduates in two or four year colleges and full time graduate students may enter. Three cash prizes of $350, $300, and $250 will be awarded with expenses to attend and participate in the 2002 ASALH annual meeting in Orlando, Florida, October 2-6. The winning essays will be presented in a special session.

Original essays may be submitted on any research topic that explores the life, history and culture of African Americans. Essays will be evaluated on their content, original research, style, organization, and documentation. Essays must conform in style to articles published in the Journal of African American History. Students may submit term or seminar papers.

Submission Procedures:

Send a removable cover letter with the title of your essay, your name, school, and summer contact information and the name of your faculty sponsor with
seven (7) copies of your paper.

Your paper should have a second cover sheet with only the title of your essay on each copy to ensure that the judging will be anonymous. You must also enclose an endorsement letter from a faculty sponsor that attests to your student status and career goals.

 We will not read submissions without faculty endorsements.

Deadline for Submission:

June 28, 2002. Winners will be notified by July 31, 2002
